How do you get rust off an old cast iron wash pot?

It is old and very rusty, but otherwise in great shape.I want to clean it up but not sure how. Thanks for your help.How do you get rust off an old cast iron wash pot?

sandpaper. i had to do that to my grandmother's old cast iron pots that i inherited. 80 grit should do it. then use 120 grit as you begin to get the surface smooth. then oil it and bake it in the oven to cure it.

vinegar helps change the oxidation of the iron (rust) because of the acid
I think you can buy a product to remove rust try your local hard ware store. good luck
first just wash it in hot water and then quickly dry. Take steel wool or sand paper and get off the obvious rust. Wash and dry again. then try spraying a cooking oil or pam on, then wipe with paper towel until nice and shiny.
Soak the pan in a solution of half white vinegar and half water to remove accumulated rust. Find a container that鈥檚 big enough to hold the rusty pan and completely submerge it into the solution. Let it soak for one to four hours, but no longer.





The acid in the vinegar dissolves rust, but if the rust doesn鈥檛 dissolve completely, a plastic scrub brush will loosen stubborn areas.





If you leave the pan in the vinegar solution for too long, the acid will start to dissolve the pan and damage it; so check the condition of the pan often while soaking. The more rust, the longer it will need to soak.





When you鈥檙e satisfied that the rust is gone, protect your hands with rubber gloves, remove the pan from the vinegar solution and rinse thoroughly under running water. Dry with a kitchen towel.


It鈥檚 the nature of cast iron for a faint sheen of rust to form on the surface almost immediately as the pan dries. Use fine sandpaper to remove the light rust, then wipe with a soft rag to remove dust.





Using a paper towel, immediately cover the pan with a thin coating of vegetable oil or shortening to prevent rust from returning.
